Both series were much longer than they should have been (Nightmare on Elm Street has 7 episodes, whilst Friday the 13th has 10). Luckily, you do not need to be an expert of both series in order to understand this cross-over.
No one would expect a great script for teen horror movies, but Freddy vs. Jason is not too bad in the genre.
By the way, little girls playing jumping rope and singing Freddy's song is quite horrifying to me:
One, two, Freddy's coming to you. Three, four, better lock your door. Five, six, grab your crucifix. Seven, eight, gonna stay up late. Nine, ten, never sleep again"
