The Rule of Four

I was attracted to The Rule of Four because many reviews compared it with The Da Vinci Code (which I enjoyed). I found it less exciting than The Da Vinci Code but is still an interesting read.

The story is about a mysterious book printed in 1499 titled Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (meaning "the strive for love in a dream by Poliphilo"). Two Princeton undergraduate found out the hidden text of this Renaissance book (just like The Bible Code) and thus revealed something valuable.

Besides code-breaking, the story is also about dedication (or obsession) -- dedication to love, friendship, and above all, research. Although there are not many action "scenes" as in The Da Vinci Code, it can still keep me turning the pages.

If you like something spontaneous or fast-paced, pick The Da Vinci Code; but if you like some ancient mystery, The Rule of Four will the choice.
